Together Again: Nuxalk Faces of the Sky
Seattle Art Museum
One of SAM’s venerable works of Northwest Coast art is the highlight of a special display which opened in December. Created around 1880, the Nuxalk sun mask—made up of a circular corona and an inset mask—will be on view with a mask from the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Joint research by curators at both museums, in consultation with Nuxalk community members, has revealed that the mask in Vancouver was the original inset for our corona and that sometime after 1920 the parts were separated and a different mask was joined with the corona. Come visit the reunion of the original pieces, on view with other compelling Nuxalk ceremonial masks from SAM’s collection.

From Abstract Expression to Colored Planes
Seattle Art Museum
n this installation, paintings from SAMÂ’s collection by Hans Hofmann, Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, and Lee Krasner provide a glimpse of the energy and movement of what became known as Abstract Expressionism. Abstract painting continued to dominate the artistic discourse in the 1950s and early 1960s, but the concerns began to shift from the tactility and energy of the painted gesture to a preoccupation with emphasizing the flatness of the canvas. In works by Helen Frankenthaler and Morris Louis this is achieved by thinned paint that saturates the canvas and melds with the support.

JOHN GRADE: After the Wawona and KAWASE HASUI: Four Shin Hanga Masters
Davidson Galleries
First Thursday: May 2nd, 6pm-8pm
Exhibition Open: May 3rd-June 1st, TWThFS 10am-5:30pm

JOHN GRADE: After the Wawona
Acclaimed Seattle artist John Grades perennial focus remains on environmentally related works, often inspired and extracted from microscopic points of view, that range from monumental (interior and exterior) installations to a more moderate scale.
This series marks a pivotal transition couched between the larger works and will feature new sculpture in wood and resin (example: Core) as well as two in iron, cast at the Kohler facility during Grades installation of Capacitor. For Grade, the human scale pieces are especially important as "they act as fertile ground – allowing time to reflect, experiment and explore alternative directions and sub themes that cannot be hit within the larger works."

KAWASE HASUI: Four Shin Hanga Masters
Davidson Galleries is pleased to present a wonderful collection of Shin-hanga woodblock prints by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957), Hiroshi Yoshida (1876-1950),Shiro Kasamatsu (1898-1991), and Ishwata Koitsu (1897-1987). Shin-hanga (new prints) was a Japanese print movement which flourished 1920-55. The term was intended to distinguish between the new direction of Japanese printmakingsosaku-hanga (creative prints) where the artist did three of what had been separate collaborations - design, create the printing matrix, and then pull the finished impression from that matrix. Shin-hanga represents a continuation of the traditional collaboration rooted in the 18th and 19th century ukiyo-e printmaking but where the subjects now reflect the influence of the West, Impressionism and other European centered art. The woodblock prints were largely exported in response to their enormous appeal for collectors in the West.

The OTHER Gun Show
The OTHER Gun Show
Artists in Seattle join the gun control dialogue

The Other Gun Show: Artists with Guns

Contact: Li Turner, curator, (206) 498-2922, LiTurner@aol.com
Gallery 110: (206) 624-9336, www.gallery110.com

A traditional gun show soon takes place in Seattle, while the NRA Annual Convention takes place in Houston, TX. Simultaneously, not coincidentally, a gun themed art exhibition featuring some of the northwest's most envelope-pushing artists will take place in Pioneer Square at Gallery110 in Seattle.

The exhibition, titled: The Other Gun Show, opens May 2nd at Gallery 110. During the artist's reception on Saturday, May 4th at 5 p.m. the artists will present a talk about the art works on view, followed at 6 by a reception. Both events are free and open to the public.

In the exhibition, each work of art will reflect the artist's personal reaction to the nation's ongoing gun dilemma. Although the exhibition will not assume an official position, it will endeavor to broaden and stimulate discussion. The participating artists are limited only by their own creativity, which proves to be astonishingly vast.

The range of artwork will extend far beyond paint-on-canvas; it will encompass a diversity of mediums. Such diversity reflects the wide range of artists in this show. Many of whom have been part of the local art scene for years, while others are quickly earning name recognition. This group exhibition includes: Jasmine Iona Brown, Jan Cook, Ron Hall, Sally Ketcham, Joan Kimura, Sabe Lewellyn, Pascale Lord, Paula Maratea, Marcy Merrill, Emmanuel Monzon, Fab Rideti, Ray Schutte, Sonya Stockton, and Li Turner

The show is being curated by Li Turner, who a few years ago, curated the well-received Barbie exhibition at Bumbershoot. Buckle your seatbelts.

Bartell Drug stores in King, Pierce & Snohomish Counties
“Bartell’s Community Food Drive” supports Food Lifeline programs helping out-of-school children, families and senior citizens in need this summer, with all Bartell’s store locations accepting nonperishable food items and personal care items. Ongoing now through June 1, the drive focuses on replenishing food bank stocks in King, Snohomish & Pierce counties during summer months--when families that normally depend on free or reduced-price school meals may struggle to provide healthy meals at home. Some food item suggestions include tuna, instant oatmeal, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, jelly, cheese crackers, applesauce and canned fruit. Other suggested items include baby formula, diapers, baby food (boxes or plastic tubs only) and personal care items such as toothpaste, tooth brushes, tissues, shampoo and conditioner, soap and feminine hygiene products.
