In 10 years, Chambers Bay went from abandoned quarry to U.S. Open host
The Washington Post - This week, U.S. Open golfers will depart their hotels and rental houses and drive to Chambers Bay along highways and roads, all of it likely constructed with the concrete that came out of the quarry once known as the Steilacoom Plant of Pioneer Sand and Gravel Company. For 100 years starting in 1902, sand and gravel - formed by the outwashes of prehistoric rivers flowing out of Ice Age glaciers - was loaded onto barges in Puget Sound, or onto hopper rail cars on the shore, and sent all over the Pacific Northwest for construction projects. Pierce County man sentenced to life at 14 on way out
